We all dread situations of anxiety, resistance, delivering tough news or having to let people go. Yet, it's also in such moments that we're being tested that leadership is called for, and true leaders emerge.

It's critical as a leader to be able to mentally recover, and collect the thoughts and strengths to navigate your team and organization forward. How to develop such 'mental toughness' is the focus of this Masterclass.

We explore the critical importance of coping, and developing mature coping strategies. But we go deeper than that; because coping strategies are only relevant if you're able to recognize within yourself that you are in need of a coping strategy. That is, developing the self-awareness that you're not operating at your best.

Therefore, we focus on developing your emotional intelligence to identify and label your emotional state. So that you can more consciously take action to bring yourself into a mentally stronger and healthier state.

This human-centered experience aims to strengthen your resilience, preparing you to deal with the inevitable 'darker' moments of your leadership journey. These challenging times are often when we gain the most profound insights about ourselves, revealing our true values, boundaries, and the kind of leader we aspire to become. How you handle these trials not only shapes your leadership but also defines how you and your leadership is perceived, experienced, and remembered.

  • Introduction to the importance of Coping, based on the work of Harvard professor George Vaillant
  • Interactively discuss and review Coping Strategies
  • Learn and experiment with a model to identify your Motivational State, in order to develop the emotional intelligence to realize you're in need of a  coping strategy
  • Introduction to Leadership Crucibles
  • In pairs, uncover the leadership insights you may gain from the experiences in which you were tested


  • Explore and extend your repertoire of with mature Coping Strategies
  • Learn to recognize your motivational state, the dominant emotions and their implications on your leadership
  • Develop the ability to re-cast the moments you were tested into leadership insights
